Welcome to 2012!

Welcome to 2012!  We're already planning great things for the coming year, but I thought we'd take a moment to reflect on the past year.

RescueGroups.org is growing steadily every year and 2011 was no exception.  Word-of-mouth momentum is increasing significantly... and we can thank our partner rescues and shelters for getting the word out about our unique life-saving services.

Increasingly, organizations that sign-up with us are just getting started -- they don't already have accounts with websites like Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet.com when they sign-up for an account with RescueGroups.org.  That's good news for us because it's an indication that we are becoming an integral part of the community -- and we're part of new organizations from their first day.  That's more proof that people are hearing about us from their friends and other members of the community.

Our unique approach has gained attention from around the animal shelter and rescue community.  Our data sharing strategy has brought hundreds of new adoption listing websites onboard -- websites like Lifesapet, Animal Ark Shelter, Northern California Pet Adoptions, Find About Pets, and the ASPCA.

Support from the large adoption listing websites like Adopt-a-Pet.com and DogTime raises awareness of our services, and we appreciate their help.  Despite the fact that Petfinder doesn't "support" adoptable pet updates from RescueGroups.org, hundreds of organizations have switched over to using the Sync App this past year to make their lives easier -- we thank the Sync App developer for their unselfish dedication to the animal welfare community.

Financial support from DogTime and the Save a Dog and Save a Cat Facebook applications continued in 2011;  most recently, we started a new service grant program that covers RescueGroups.org services.

In 2011 we completed two major projects -- our new Email Marketing service, and major improvements to the Online Forms feature.  Both projects help us provide valuable services to the community.  Those updates, and the hundreds of other updates and improvements we made in 2011, all help the rescue and shelter community work more effectively.

We'll continue to lead in the community with major new features in the first few months of 2012.  We're excited to announce a new feature soon that has the potential to have a huge impact on the animal welfare community!

We can do all of this because of your support -- please continue to tell everyone you know about us.  Please also take a close look at our services to see if perhaps there are additional ways we can help you.

Thanks again for your continued support, and we're looking forward to a great 2012!

- Richard

Upcoming changes to the RescueGroups.org Campaigns Feature

The Campaigns feature (built into our Data Management and Website services) was designed to help you organize various types of campaigns, including email, direct mail, and online.  The simple capability of sending emails was added to the feature, but never intended for heavy use.

Sending large quantities of email is a very expensive and laborious task -- it can cause a lot of administrative headaches, specifically related to spam, mailing list management and legal ramifications.

That's exactly why we created the Email Marketing Campaigns (EMC) service.  There are plenty of legal and administrative reasons for us to provide the community a more effective tool for sending emails to their mailing lists.

Here's the important part:

If your organization is actively using the current Campaigns feature to send you, you should start using the EMC service to send your emails instead.

We will be removing the email capabilities of the Campaigns feature at the end of this month (August, 2011), in favor of the new EMC service.

We are providing a free level of service (up to 500 email messages per month) specifically to help our users migrate over to the new service without additional cost.

If you need help getting your mailing list and/or email campaigns setup in the new service please let us know.  We would be glad to help.

You can sign-up for the free level of service by going to: Services > Sign up for Email Marketing service from the Manage website:

https://manage.rescuegroups.org

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Service Grant Submission Deadline is August 31st

Since April of 2010 we have approved over 100 service grants for our Website, Data Management, Email and Domain Name services.  Most of those grants have been extended to a total of 2 years.

We have been very happy to provide service grants to so many organizations, but the funds are limited.

August 31, 2011 will be the last day that we will accept service grant applications or the submission of supporting documentation.  All submissions and paperwork must be received by the 31st in order to be processed.

We hope to be able to offer service grants again in the near future.  We are continually searching for ways to make that happen.

Our service pricing is not changing and our free services will remain completely free, including the Pet Adoption Portal, Pet Adoption Toolkit, Pet Adoption Kiosk and the Facebook Adoption iframe.

RescueGroups.org extends grants for a second year

So far, 99 organizations have been approved for the RescueGroups.org Service Grant.  We're really excited about how many organizations we've been able to help with the grants!

We've decided to extend the existing approved grants for a second year -- meaning the organizations that have an approved grant will receive a second year of free Website, Data Management, Domain Name and Email Services!

There's still time to submit your organization's grant application.  For more information please see this page:

Tips! for Creating or Redoing your Website

New Website or Site Redo...Step back and plan on paper first.

Did you sign up for a RescueGroups.org Website?
Are you thinking about redoing your existing RescueGroups.org website?
Not sure where to start?

Here are some tips that may help make the process go a little more smoothly, and maybe even fun!

Where to start...

  • Tip: Get to know the functionality of the website service (Quick Start Guide, User Guide, Training)
  • Be the user! Your site should make it easy for your user to find the information they need.
  • Take a step back before diving right in; do a little pre-planning.

Big Picture

  • What is the main purpose of this site?
  • How do I focus the users attention to this purpose?
  • What is the secondary, tertiary purpose of the site?
  • What is the first thing I want someone to see when they visit my site?

Layout

  • How do I want to present this information?
  • Which of the built-in layouts looks like this will work best for my groups needs in presenting this information.

Tip: Don't be afraid to start with one layout and then change later if needed. None of your content will be deleted if you change the layout.
Tip: Leave the colors for now and come back to this later.

Creating Your Site Navigation

  • Pre-Plan -- Create a word doc!
  • Start with a list with a hierarchy or all items at level 1
    • Level 1 main items, Level 2 are child Items, like a numbered list or bulleted list

After you have your word doc with navigation:

  • Determine which pages come standard with the service and what pages you will need to create.
  • Any pages that say "built-in" come standard.

Tip: You can also rename these pages on your site navigation if you do not like the built-in name.

Need Advice?

If you have any questions, please feel free to open support ticket and ask us!  We can also help provide guidance and assistance on editing the size of fonts, colors, etc.

If you need any assistance after the upgrade is complete, please contact support from our Contact page.

System Upgrades Coming in February

Dear Supporters:

We have some exciting news!  Later this month we will be upgrading our systems so that we can provide an even higher level of service to our partners!

We'll be providing additional information regarding the upgrade as we get closer -- but there are a couple things we needed you to know right-away:

- The Pet Adoption Tracker and website hits charts will not update starting this coming Sunday 2/6 through when we complete our system upgrade later this month.  The tracker and website hits data will still be collected, and will be immediately available in the charts when the upgrade is complete.

- We aren't changing the functionality of any of our services -- so don't worry about things looking completely different after our upgrade.  We'll let you know before hand about the few minor things that will look or act different so there's no surprises or lost productivity.

What you won't be able to see is the significant horsepower we're adding behind our services -- tons more server power, storage for data and images, load balancers, and making it possible to scale up our resources without limits.

We are making huge improvements on the "backend" so there might be a few bugs to resolve, but we're planning, working and testing to avoid any big problems... and any problems we do notice will be resolved immediately.

For our users, the biggest impact will be the possibility of new services in the near future.  We've been talking recently about a few of the services we'd like to offer, and after our upgrades they will quickly become a reality.

So, watch your mailbox over the next week or two for additional information.

Email Marketing — Beta Coming Soon

We've been working on a new service -- Email Marketing. The service will help you send newsletters and emails to your supporters, and will manage subscriptions, unsubscribes, forwards, etc.

We're still developing the service (and it will be a few more weeks), but we'd like to gather a list of volunteers and organizations that would be willing to help us beta test the service.

Please contact us if you are interested and include the following information:

- Do you currently send emails to your supporters (newsletters, etc)
- Do you currently use a service (like Constant Contact) to send emails
- How many people are currently on your email list
- What is your availability to do some testing and provide feedback

Thank you for your time, and we'll contact you if you are selected for the beta test!

Update Petfinder with the Sync App

The Petfinder Sync App is up-and-running after the changes Petfinder made last month. Hundreds of organizations are using the Petfinder Sync App to keep their Petfinder pet list updated when they make changes to their RescueGroups.org pet list. And the best part -- it's one less thing you have to worry about and fewer frustrations.

For additional information regarding exporting to Petfinder please go to your Animals Exports page and click the link under your Petfinder export. For example, in the Management interface you should go to Animals > Exports and scroll down to the Petfinder export.

If you need any help with any of your exports, please contact support.
